"Germas" Community Outreach in Klaten, Central Java

On Wednesday, January 17, 2024, the Polkesyo Community Service (Pengabmas) team embarked on a mission to Gandekan hamlet, Karangdowo sub-district, Klaten district, Central Java, where they conducted community outreach and promotion focusing on the Healthy Living Community Movement (Germas). Joining forces with Mr. H. Rahmad Handoyo, S.Pi, M.M, a member of the DPR RI from Commission IX, the initiative aimed to engage approximately 400 participants from Karangdowo District, Klaten. Accompanying them were Mrs. Inayati Hasanah Evita Dewi, SKM from the Klaten Regency Health Office, as well as the heads of Karangdowo Village and District. Dr. Agus Kharmayana Rubaya, SKM, MKes, led the Polkesyo Community Service Team as the Head of Research and Community Service (PPM).

Germas advocates for cultivating a culture of healthy living while discarding unhealthy habits and behaviors within society. The movement was also followed by Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) and supports community-based infrastructure programs. Launched by the Ministry of Health in 2016, Germas aims to bolster community participation in healthy lifestyles, enhance productivity, and alleviate healthcare costs.

During the event, Mrs. Inayati Hasanah Evita Dewi, SKM, underscored the importance of addressing health issues within families and communities, urging collaboration with local authorities for effective solutions. Serving as the keynote speaker, Mr. H. Rahmad Handoyo, S.Pi, M.M, elucidated on healthy living principles and emphasized the significance of a balanced lifestyle. He outlined the steps for implementing Germas, including daily physical activity, regular consumption of fruits and vegetables, routine health check-ups, exclusive breastfeeding, environmental cleanliness, and utilizing home gardens for nutrition. The socialization session concluded with a symbolic gesture as Mr. Rahmad Handoyo handed over bread for toddlers to the community members present.
